December 1970 protest meeting a t Balnarring Racecourse objecting to a proposed oil refinery (proposed by Sleigh and Ampol) At the mike is Cr Stan Smith and also Mrs Anne Cairns and Mr Alan Hunt. Although many did not oppose another refinery in Westernport, most opposed to the site chosen on 800 acres in Bittern. There should be no industry south of Myers Road or west of Hendersons Road. Those present eleccted a steering committee for the formation of a Peninsula wide Council to look into the Government’s industrial, economis and planning policy for the Westernport region of the Mornington Peninsula. Elected to this were Cr Stan smith, Cr Lorna Bennetts, Mr Gordon Bryant MHR, Mrs Anne Cairns assistant secretary of the Peninsula Conservation League, Dr W Carrol, Dr Lena Thomas, Mrs Ilsa van Rennan, Messrs W wiseman, Ronald Robb, John Hodgson, Angus McIvor.
