HISTORYThere are two “original photos” of this image.
P35.1: This is a photo of local Militia. Written on the back is “Hastings battery in Hastings Park c1900”. “Picture of Hastings Volunteers at Langwarrin early 1900’s” is also written on the back but crossed out. Also written in pencil is “Note armbands mourning death of Queen Victoria 1901”.
P35 2: The photo came from the collection of Frederick J. Perrott. Typed on the front is “1890 - 1904. 40 POUNDER BATTERY VICTORIAN RANGERS ON PARADE. BANDS MOURNING DEATH OF QUEEN VICTORIA.” The remainder of the typing is torn off. The measurement for this photo is H20.5 W24.5.
Printed in pen on the back of one of the copies is “VICTORIAN RANGERS MOURNING DEATH OF QUEEN VICTORIA’.
The image shows two rows of men in uniform. Some men on the left are playing brass instruments including trumpets and on the right some men are playing trumpets and one man is playing a large drum. Oxen are seen standing further along the rows of men plus a man on horseback. Pine trees are seen on both sides of the image. The men are wearing black armbands.
