HISTORY

Jessie Mentiplay was 8 years old when her family moved from next door into their newly built home c. 1890 (the house on the left-hand side of the photograph). After her marriage to Alf Haddock (he carried fish from Hastings Jetty to Hastings Railway Station), Jessie and Alf lived in this home, which was in Skinner Street, Hastings. They had no children. Jessie’s mother died in the front room and Jessie and her husband then used the back part of the home. Jessie burnt large logs in her kitchen fire. The other home on the right-hand side of the photograph belonged to Mrs “Pop” Lothian. Written in blue ink and biro on the back of the photograph is: “Maddock Home April 1976” “Jessie Maddock (nee Mentiplay) was born in 1882. Was 8 years old when the family shifted from next door into their newly built home circa 1890”. Written in pencil is: “from A.E. Perrott”.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows two older style houses. The older house on the left of the photograph is weatherboard and not painted. The galvanised iron roof has faded red stripes across it and is rusty in parts. There is a bull-nosed verandah at the front with four posts. A large chimney can be seen at the back. There is a post and wire fence across the front with a little gate and a red letterbox. A picket fence separates the two houses. The house on the right of the photograph is weatherboard and painted cream with a red roof. It has a front verandah with four posts. The grass between the houses and the street looks dead. The sky is blue with a little high-level cloud.
