HISTORYThis is one of a series of colourized early postcards of Somerville, Victoria, showing the Mechanics Institute in Somerville. On the front of the building is printed: “Mechanics Somerville Institute” and at the bottom of the postcard is printed “Mechanics Institute, Somerville. Vic.”. On the back of the postcard is printed: “Post Card For Correspondence For Address”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is of the Mechanics Institute, Somerville, which is printed in very large letters across the front of the building and also at the bottom of the postcard. The bricks are coloured red and the remainder of the building is rendered. There are four heraldic crests at the top of four pillars on the front of the building. Four large windows with embossed plaques above are on either side of the entrance. A picket fence can be seen on either side of the building and pine trees to the left of the postcard. There is a concrete footpath at the front and a street is in the foreground.
