HISTORYThis is one of a series of colourized early postcards of Somerville, Victoria showing Station Street, Somerville with the Hotel Somerville in the foreground. . Printed on the front of the postcard is: “Station Street, Somerville. Vic.” and on the back is: “Post Card For Correspondence For Address”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is of a wide street with buildings on either side. There are several old vehicles in the street. The building on the right-hand side of the image is a large two storey, brick and rendered building with a tiled roof, a verandah and a tall chimney. The words HOT and SOMER can be seen on the side of the building. A post and mesh fence is in front of the building with overgrown grass on either side. Other brick buildings with red roofs can be seen on the the same side of the road. The last building visible on this side of the road is the Mechanics Institute. On the left-hand side of the image is a shop with the word “PAINTS” visible as part of their advertising. Several electric light poles are visible on either side of the street. Printed at the bottom of the postcard is: “Station Street, Somerville, Vic.”.
