HISTORYThis early photo shows Hastings Pier, fishing boats, fishing shed and the township of Hastings. On the right-hand side of the photograph is the double story hotel “The Royal” later the “Western Port”. On the left-hand side of the photograph, the high pitched roof of “The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints” can be seen. On the front of the photo is written: “c 1900 Hastings and other settlements depended largely on fishing for over 100 years - jetty constructed 1864 for £590”. Written on the back of the large copy is: “Pier constructed by Goul contractors Mr Williams who also constructed Flinders Pier in 1866”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a jetty in a large expanse of water with fishing boats along both sides and a township in the background. Shops and houses with picket fences can be seen. There is a fishing shed on the jetty and the word “HASTINGS” is on the front, right-hand side of the image. Fishing nets are handing over the rails of the jetty. There are several men along the Jetty and a man in a horse-drawn vehicle is leaving the jetty. There is a line of large trees behind the township. Written at the bottom of the image in beautiful writing is: “c 1900 Hastings and other settlements depended largely on fishing for over 100 years - jetty constructed 1864 for £590”.
