HISTORYThis store was built on the corner of Eramosa Road East and Grant Road, Somerville by Peter Holmes about 1890. The store was named J.P. Holmes after Peter’s son, James Patrick. James was an engineer and architect and wasn’t himself, involved with the store. Written on the back in blue biro is: “Somerville: Holmes Doherty Ritchie (The Grainery). Also written is: “Photograph 1858 (later than that) 1890’s”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is of a General Store with a group of people on the roadside at the front of the store. On the left-hand side of the image is a man in a two wheel spring cart with a light coloured horse. He is wearing a hat and has a dark beard. The other vehicle is a plaeton being pulled by a dark horse with a lady is sitting in the seat. She is wearing a large hat and a dark coat. Standing beside the plaeton is a lady in a dark dress, large hat and holding an umbrella. A lady in a light coloured dress with a white apron is standing beside the back wheel of the plaeton. Behind her is a man, wearing a three piece suit, hat and tie. They are all looking at the camera. The shop is of brick construction with a verandah on two sides with wooden posts on the footpath. The signs on the shop are: “J.P. Holmes General Storekeeper Ales, Spirits, Wines etc. Wholes Bakery Grocery Corn & Chaff. The shop is currently operated by Richies, IGA Supermarket.
