HISTORY

This is a family portrait of Sergeant Major Creaney and his family. He was from the Hastings Battery. The gun barrel is an Armstrong Gun. As instructor, he took the men from raw novices to one of the best units in Victoria. He was an inaugural member of The Hastings Minstrels who performed their first concert in October 1891.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows a group of people posing for a portrait. Two young people are standing at the rear, a man and a woman are sitting and a young girl is seated in front of them. The man is dressed in full military uniform. The woman is wearing a dark full-length dress. It has a belt at the waist, a high neckline, with a brooch, a half collar and puffed long sleeves. There is lace on the collar and on part of the bodice. She is wearing a straw hat with a wide band and a brooch attached at the front. The young woman standing is wearing a three-quarter length, long sleeved dress with a large collar and a high neckline with a bar brooch attached. There is lace around the collar, neckline, wrist and waist which has a sash tied in a large bow. Her hair is long and she is wearing a matching high hat with a large white bow at the front with two hat pins. She is wearing black boots. The other young person, standing, is dressed in a military uniform. The young girl sitting is wearing a dark coloured, long sleeved dress with a lace collar and a brooch attached. She has a very wide sash tied with a big bow at her waist. She is wearing a hat and boots. A large gun barrel can be seen in the background. There are old, bare floorboards on the ground.
