HISTORYThis is a photograph of the Hastings Battery with an Armstrong gun, taken in 1900 at Hastings. Sebastiano Mirabella and John and Tom Kearns are in the back row. Tom and Dave Mentiplay are in the middle row and the Perrott Brothers are at the front. Written on the back of the photograph in blue biro is: “The property of Harold Haddock. Plymouth Street Hastings 6/5/60. Members of Hastings 40 Pr Bullock Battery. 1900”. Also written in black pen is: “Mrs Haddock with compliments”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a large group of men in uniform posing for a photograph. They are in a grassed paddock in front of a large tree. A shed with two large open doors is behind them on the left-hand side of the image. Large trees are behind the shed. There is a large gun on a gun-carriage in the centre of the image with about ten men pulling a rope attached to a wheel of the carriage. Other men are standing around. Six men are standing to attention, in a line, on the right-hand side of the image and a greyhound dog is behind them. A soldier on horseback is behind them. Part of another gun-carriage can be seen behind him. Planks that the gun-carriage run on, are seen on the ground.
