HISTORYThis image shows the military detachment of the Hastings Battery of the Victorian Ranges. Sergeant Major Henry John Creaney, with moustache, is in the middle foreground facing the camera at the head of the band. Harold John Creaney, his son, is the bugle boy, left of the drummer and behind the cornet player. Harold John is the father of Neville. The vacant block of land adjacent to the library, is on the corner of Pike Street and the Parade. The Library and Reading Room burnt down in 1912. The Cobb & Co holding yards are at the middle, rear of the photograph. The bullocks are pulling a 40 pound gun. Written on the back of the photograph is: “Military Detachment Hastings (Vic) circa 1902/3”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is of a military detachment marching in the street led by a military band. A soldier on horseback is behind them and a team of bullocks and more horses are following. Men, women and children are lining the street watching the parade. Everyone is very well dressed. Some of the children are waving flags. A cast iron gas lamp is in the foreground. Wooden shops and buildings with iron roofs line the street, including the Library and Post Office, both of which are flying flags. A white picket fence is seen on the right-hand side of the image. Many other buildings are seen in the distance and the Western Port, looking to French Island is seen in the background. A fishing shed can be seen at the top left-hand side. A hitching rail is in front of the Post Office.
