HISTORYThis image shows the military detachment of the Hastings Battery of the Victorian Ranges. Sergeant Major Henry John Creaney is head of the band. Harold John Creaney, his son, is the bugle boy. Harold John is the father of Neville. The vacant block of land adjacent to the library, is on the corner of Pike Street and the Parade. The Library and Reading Room burnt down in 1912. The Cobb & Co holding yards are at the middle, rear of the photograph. The bullocks are pulling a 40 pound gun. Written on the back of the photograph is: “Hastings Battery J. White about 1900”. Additional information for this image has been typed on a piece of white paper and glued to one of the copies. It reads: “1908 No. 6 Battery Australian Field Artillery on parade. In 1904 (after federation) Victorian Rangers became A.F.A. The gun carriage is drawn by bullock team under command of Gunner Jim Turner”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is of a military detachment marching in the street led by a military band. A soldier on horseback is behind them and a team of bullocks, pulling a cannon on a gun carriage is following. Men, women and children are bringing up the rear. Wooden buildings with iron roofs, including the Library & Reading Room, are on the right-hand side of the image. A bay with jetty and fishing shed can be seen in the distance. People are walking along either side of the parade. A post and rail fence is seen on the left-hand side and a hitching post is on the right-hand side of the image. A gas lamp is in the foreground. The photograph is taken from an elevated height.
