HISTORYThese soldiers are N.C.O.s and gunners of the Hastings Battery, Australian Field Artillery, 1904-1909. They are in front of a gun shed on the Hastings foreshore. There were about fifty men in the No. 6 Battery and the following four were sergeants: J. Harding, D. Mentiplay, A. Denham and F. Stockton. Written on the back in blue biro is: “6/5/60 The property of Harold Haddock 6. Plymouth Street, Hastings To be returned please N.C.O.s & Gunners of Hastings Battery. Australian Field Artillery. 1904-09”. Doug Mentiplay is a sergeant on the left.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a group of soldiers in three rows, posing for a photograph. There are ten men standing at the back, eight men kneeling and crouching in the middle row and four men half-lying on the ground at the front. They are dressed in full uniform with slouch hats. Two men are holding small poles with a folded banner/flag. Part of a shed can be seen behind them with large open wooden doors. The cardboard mounting is embossed.
