HISTORYThis fisherman is Sebastiano Mirabella. He was born at Catania, Sicily on 08/10/1859. He was the son of Gaetano Mirabella and Pasqualena Scalletta. He came to Australia with Giovana Napoli on the “Europa”, arriving in Melbourne on 06/08/1880. He was on Sandstone Island for three months. He married Matilda Kearns on 31/08/1885 at Hastings, Victoria. They had eleven children. He died at Hastings on 22/09/1946. Written on the back of the photograph in blue biro is: “Sebastiano Granddad Mirabella”. This original photograph was owned by Del Mirabella. The copy measures L15 x W10.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is of a fisherman, standing side-on, posing for a photo. He is standing in front of a wooden rail with a large rolled-up fishing net across his left shoulder and hanging over the rail. He is wearing a heavy duty coat and long trousers with knee-high rubber boots. He has grey hair and moustache and a slight smile on his face. Part of another fishing net can be seen on the far left-hand side of the image. Part of a wire netting fence can be seen along with the legs of another man behind that.
