HISTORYThis is Sgt Major Creaney and the men of the Hastings Battery with the barrel of the 40 pounder Armstrong gun. The men are: back row: Sebastiano Mirabella, Sgt Major Creaney and either John or Tom Kearns. centre row: Tom Mentiplay and David Mentiplay. front row: thought to be the Perrott brothers. Written on the back of the photograph in blue ink is: “The property of Harold Haddock Plymouth Street Hastings. 21/8/53 To be returned please. 6/5/60 Sgt Major Creaney and N.C. Officers of the Hastings 40 pr. Bullock Battery. 1900.”. The photographers details are also stamped in purple ink.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows seven soldiers posing for a photograph in the doorway of a shed. Three men are standing, two sitting on chairs and two half-lying on the ground at the front. There is a large gun barrel behind the men. Three small flags on poles are leaning together on either side of the men. All men are in military uniform which includes pill-box hats, wide leather belts and a wide stripe down the side of the trousers. A large wooden door is on the right-hand side of the photograph.
