HISTORY

This photograph shows the official opening of the Remembrance Garden of Peace at the Pioneer Cottage which is part of the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society complex. The speaker is Lieut. Col. Rhoden. The woman in the white dress is Shirley Davies, who was the President of the Society. The young girl standing in the centre is Laura Purves, who was the youngest Society member. Mrs Myrtle Ingram, sitting on the left, is wearing her husband’s Victoria Cross and next to her is Hon Robin Cooper, Minister for Transport. The Remembrance Garden is made up of carpet roses, in pink, white and deep pink, called ‘Remember Me’ and ‘Spirit of Peace’. Funding for the garden was received from Australia Remembers Fund. A plaque was placed on this day to commemorate 50 years of peace.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows a group of people on the verandah of a wooden cottage. The cottage is painted cream with a green iron roof. The verandah has wooden floorboards, cream posts and brown fancy wrought iron trim. A pipe railing is visible beside a brick step and path. A man, dressed in a suit and wearing medals, is standing in the middle of the verandah reading from notes held in his right hand. A megaphone is on his left-hand side. Three people are sitting on the left-hand side of the verandah. A woman, dressed in white with medals pinned on her dress, is standing in the doorway of the cottage. Three young girls are standing in front of her. The girls are holding baskets in their hands. Part of a man, holding a white paper, can be seen on the right-hand side in the foreground.
