HISTORYThe older cottage was originally the Mentiplay home in Skinner Street, Hastings. Jessie Mentiplay and her husband Alf Haddock lived in this cottage after their marriage. Jessie was born in 1882 and was eight years old when the family built this cottage in 1890. After Jessie’s mother died in the front room, Jessie and her husband only lived in the back part of the house. Jessie used to burn large logs in her kitchen fire. Alf carried fish from the Hastings Jetty to the Hastings Railway Station. Jessie had no children. This home was considered at one time by the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society as an Historical Cottage. It burnt down on 18/12/1979. This photograph was taken in April, 1976. Written on the back in blue ink is: “Haddock Home April 1976”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows two small weather board cottages standing side by side. They both have iron roofs, four post verandahs, a side window and a brick chimney. The cottage on the left is unpainted and has a rusty roof. The cottage on the right is painted cream with a red roof. A television antenna can be seen near the chimney. A electricity pole is in the foreground on the left-hand side of the image. A post and wire fence with a small white gate is in front of the older cottage and a red letterbox is near the gate. A paling fence separates the two cottages. An unpaved footpath is in front of the cottages. Part of a road can be seen at the bottom right-hand corner
