HISTORYThis cottage was originally the Mentiplay home in Skinner Street, Hastings. Jessie Mentiplay and her husband Alf Haddock lived in this cottage after their marriage. Jessie was born in 1882 and was eight years old when the family built this cottage in 1890. After Jessie’s mother died in the front room, Jessie and her husband only lived in the back part of the house. Jessie used to burn large logs in her kitchen fire. Alf carried fish from the Hastings Jetty to the Hastings Railway Station. Jessie had no children. This home was considered at one time by the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society as an Historical Cottage.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a cottage engulfed in flames and smoke. The image is very dark, but the cottage can easily be defined with the flames inside. A silhouette of trees can be seen on the left-hand side.
