HISTORY

This cottage was originally the Mentiplay home in Skinner Street, Hastings. Jessie Mentiplay and her husband Alf Haddock lived in this cottage after their marriage. Jessie was born in 1882 and was eight years old when the family built this cottage in 1890. After Jessie’s mother died in the front room, Jessie and her husband only lived in the back part of the house. Jessie used to burn large logs in her kitchen fire. Alf carried fish from the Hastings Jetty to the Hastings Railway Station. Jessie had no children. This home was considered at one time by the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society as an Historical Cottage. This photograph was taken at 2.30pm on the afternoon of the fire.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows the burnt-out remains of a building. A brick chimney is still standing and there is a lot of twisted sheets of corrugated iron around the chimney and on the ground. A brick house with a tiled roof is behind a fence in the background. Part of a roof of another house can be seen on the left-hand side of the image. Tall trees can be seen in the background behind the chimney and there is grass in the foreground.
