HISTORYThis is the Somerville Primary State School No. 2656 in 1936. This building was destroyed by fire in 1953. Printed in black on a piece of paper and glued to the back of the photograph is: “Primary School:3 teachers, 3 rooms.”. After the fire, classes were held in church halls for more than a year. The first building on the burnt-out site was an old school building transported from Eildon. This formed the beginning of a new school complex. The rebuilt school was opened by Mr (later Sir) William Leggatt, Minister for Education and Local Member for Mornington.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a wooden building with a sign on the wall which reads “Somerville School No. 2656”. The building has an galvanized iron roof and a large chimney can be seen on the right-hand side of the building. Three windows are along the wall and a group of children are standing around an open doorway on the right-hand side of the building. One boy is standing beside a bicycle. A large flower garden is beside the road leading into the school and trees can be seen in the background.
