HISTORYThis is a gathering in the first hall to be built in Hastings. This hall was first proposed at a public meeting at Peddle’s Bay View Hotel, on 18/05/1877. It was built in 1878 by Messrs Stirling & Haddock (tender 225 pounds) to plans and specifications of Mr Grover of Mornington. The land was given by Henry Peddle and the public subscribed for the “Hastings Library & Reading Room”. This hall was destroyed by fire in the early hours of February 29, 1912.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a very large group of people in front of a stage, inside a hall, posing for a photo. There are approximately seventy people of all ages. They are all very well dressed. The back wall of the stage and a curved ceiling can be seen as well as drawn-back curtains on each side of the stage. Two lanterns are handing above the stage and a pot plant is on either side of the stage.
