HISTORYThis memorial stained glass window is in the Donington Parish Church in Lincolnshire, England. The Matthew Flinders family were parishioners there and this window in the church depicts the role of Matthew along with Sir Joseph Banks and George Bass in Australian exploration. Harry and Valda Cole from Hastings visited this church on Tuesday, 28 May, 1985. This information is written on the back of the post card in black pen. Also printed on the back of the post card in black ink is: “POST CARD Judges Limited, Hastings England CAPTAIN MATTHEW FLINDERS MEMORIAL WINDOW, DONINGTON PARISH CHURCH, LINCOLNSHIRE C7722X”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a stained glass window with an image of Matthew Flinders standing in the centre panel. He is wearing a blue and gold trimmed coat and white waistcoat and britches underneath. He is holding a telescope in his left hand. His right hand is on his hip and his feet are crossed. Above him a plaque reads: Matthew Flinders 1774-1814. On the left-hand side of the image there is an image of Joseph Banks and on the right-hand side an image of George Bass. A map, sun dial, ship and navigating instruments are across the bottom. Coats of arms are in the panels at the top of the window.
