HISTORYThis is Marker No. 8, placed by the Hastings Historical Society for the Australian Bicentennial commemorations. The unveiling was at 11.00am on February, 6, 1988.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a black plaque with white printing, placed on a square block of concrete. The inscription reads as follows: “Shire of Hastings Historical Society Inc. Marker No. 8 Placed during Australia’s Bicentennial Year 1988 to commemorate a walk through Tyabb by William Thomas (1793-1867) Assistant Protector of Aborigines for Western Port with a party of 57 Aborigines. ‘encamp’d at a place called Teyup....took a sketch from the hill’ wrote William Thomas on 5 February, 1840 as the party travelled from Port Phillip to Western Port. An Australian Bicentennial project with financial assistance from the Victorian Government and the Shire of Hastings. Tablet placed in 1988 by Renee Hill a William Thomas descendant.” The Bicentennial logo of the Australia map is at the top of the plaque.
