HISTORYThis group of men are searching for practice shells from the Armstrong 40 pound gun on Long Island for the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society. The names of the men, from left to right, are as follows: “Lionel Elmore, Geoff Allman, Bruce Alderson, Doug Thompson, Petty Officer Steven Collins R.A.N., Keith Cole, David Mason, Andrew Allman, Norm Francis, Peter Ainsworth, Gaza Shaw and Matt Hurley, R.A.N. Missing from the photograph are John Woolley, who took the photo and Bill Patience, Edwin Mawson and Tim Long. The men in the boat in the second photo are Edwin Mawson in the yellow coat and Jim Harris in the dark hat.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a group of twelve men standing on the wet sand with water behind them. A line of hills can be seen in the far background. Most of the men are looking at the camera. The two men on the far left are holding shovels. Two men are wearing beanies, two are wearing hats and one a cap. All men are wearing coats and jackets. The man second from the right is holding a box and the man fourth from the left is holding a carry-bag. Two boats can be seen on the water in the distance. The particulars of the occasion and the names of the men are typed on white card and attached to the left-hand side of the photograph. The entire surface has been laminated.
