HISTORYThis group is gathered beside the Hastings fishing shed. The occasion was for the Herald Learn to Swim Campaign. The children had swimming lessons every week. The girl second from the left, is Jean Mentiplay. The woman in the back row is Mrs Grace Price who was the caretaker of the Hastings Railway Station. The swimming teachers were Doug Harlow and his wife. Stamped on the back of the photograph is “F 479” and “Kodak Print”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a large group of approximately forty children and three adults posing for a photograph, in water, beside a shed. All the children are in swimming attire and either sitting or standing. A woman, dressed in white, is squatting in the front row on the far right-hand side. Another woman and a man are standing in the back row. A jetty is in the background. Boats and tall masts can be seen beside the jetty. Written at the top of the image in pen is: “Hastings 1932”.
