HISTORYThis group of workers are from the Hastings Hosiery Mills, commonly known as The Sock Factory which was on the corner of Church and Victoria Streets, Hastings. It was built in 1946 by Mr P.J. Gaskin. In 1960 it was manufacturing 35,000 pairs of hosiery annually and the staff numbered eighteen. In June 1954 a gas cylinder exploded causing the wall to collapse and the roof to cave in. It was rebuilt and continued until 1965 when it was closed. DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a group of fifteen people posing for a photo. There are three men and six women standing and six women sitting on the ground in front of them. They are all smiling for the camera. The two men at each end of the back row have their shirt sleeves rolled up. The other man is wearing braces. The women are wearing either skirts and tops or print dresses. Some are wearing cardigans. Part of a brick wall can be seen behind the group. A window is on the left-hand side of the wall.
