HISTORYThis is a studio portrait of Captain George Clarke, taken about 1900. He was Western Port ferry master for sixteen years. He came to Australia during the 1860s. His first command was the steamer ‘Eclipse’ which came to the bay in 1876 and later he became a partner in the ferry Company. He died at age fifty. This photograph comes from the Arthur Woodley Collection.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows an oval portrait of a man, taken from the chest up. He has a greying beard and moustache and his hair is neatly combed back. He is looking away from the camera. He is wearing a double breasted coat. Part of a white shirt with a small high collar can be seen beneath the beard.
