HISTORY

This ship is the H.M.A.S ‘Stuart’ a Destroyer Flotilla Leader. It saw service in the Mediterranean, including Battle of Matapan, Greek and Crete campaigns. The following information is printed on the back of the postcard: “No. 76 Knots 36.5 Name HMAS Stuart Class Campbell (ExR.N.) Type D Year 1918 Tons 1,530 Comp. Armament 5-4” 8-smaller 6.21”tubes refitted for service 1937. Remarks 1944 Removed from effective list, then for scrap.” This postcard is stored with the plans for the refit of the ship in 1937.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows a navel ship travelling along in the open sea. White waves are breaking against the ship. The ship has two funnels and a tall flagpole. Two guns can be seen mounted at the front of the ship. The following is printed across the bottom of the image: “Defence Series No. 159 H.M.A.S. “Stuart” Destroyer Flotilla Leader. Has seen extensive service in the Mediterranean in the present war (including Battle of Matapan, Greek and Crete campaigns.) Displacement 1,530 tons. Speed 36 1/2 knots. Main armament: five 4.7 inch guns, 8 smaller guns, 6 torpedo tubes. Photograph Released by Navy.” HMAS Stuart can also be seen faintly printed in the water at the bottom left-hand side of the image.
