HISTORY

Joseph Haddock was born in New South Wales in 1844 and came to Hastings in 1871, where he was at first a builder then a fisherman. He died in 1919 at the age of 75. The Joe Haddock,writer of the letter from the Boer War, appears to be his son, also Joseph, born in 1879, died 1945.

DESCRIPTION

Photocopies of two newspaper cuttings. One is dated 15 Feb 1902, and is a copy of a letter written by Private Joe Haddock, of the Fifth Victorian Mounted Rifles, on 24/12/1901, to his sister at Hastings, describing some of his experiences serving in the Boer War and his celebration of Christmas on that day. The other is dated 27 Sept 1919, and is an obituary notice for Mr Joseph Haddock.
