HISTORYLouis Raemaekers (1869-1956) was a Dutch painter and cartoonist for the Amsterdam Telegraaf during World War I, noted for his anti-German stance. His graphic cartoons depicted the rule of the German military in Belgium. During the course of the war the British Government had 1160 propaganda pamphlets published and an early pamphlet, Report on alleged German outrages, written during 1915, said that the Germans had systematically tortured Belgian civilians. To make the pamphlet more credible Raemaekers was asked to make some drawings that would create high emotion among the British public.
DESCRIPTIONA booklet of cartoons, each captioned, drawn by Louis Raemaekers and published by Hodder & Stoughton of London by permission of the proprietors of Land & Water. Some captions are dated 1914. The subjects are all of the German treatment of Belgium in the First World War.
