HISTORY

Bruce Bairnsfather (1888-1959) served as an officer in the British Army on the Western Front in France in the first World War, and whilst there drew pictures of trench life. In 1915 the Bystander magazine began publishing his drawings, and while wounded in hospital in London he was commissioned to do a weekly drawing for the magazine. Later his drawings were published in a series of books.

DESCRIPTION

A booklet of cartoons, each captioned, drawn by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather and published by H. R. Baines and Co. for the Bystander. The subjects are all humorous depictions of British soldiers in France in the First World War. This is Vol. 4 in the series and is also titled Fragments from France
