HISTORYBruce Bairnsfather (1888-1959) served as an officer in the British Army on the Western Front in France in the first World War, and whilst there drew pictures of trench life. In 1915 the Bystander magazine began publishing his drawings, and while wounded in hospital in London he was commissioned to do a weekly drawing for the magazine. Later his drawings were published in a series of books.
