HISTORYThis soldier is William Smith who was a member of the Hastings Battery which was also known as the Ham & Beef Battery. This group was also known as the Victorian Rangers. In 1904, after Federation, they became the A.F.A. (Australian Field Artillery). The original photograph comes from the George Dawson Collection and was copied/photographed by Dr Bruce Bennett for the purpose of research/publication.
DESCRIPTIONThis image is a portrait of a soldier, taken from the waist up. He is dressed in army uniform. His jacket is buttoned up to the neck and a wide leather belt is around his waist. His small pillbox hat is sitting on the right-hand side of his head and has a leather chin strap. He has a large moustache, a serious look on his face and is looking away from the camera.
