HISTORY

The Julie Burgess was the last of a series of vessels built and sailed by the Burgess family in the waters of Bass Strait and the Tasmanian coasts. She was built and launched at Launceston in Tasmania in 1936 for Harry Burgess, and was designed specifically as a crayfishing ketch, although used on occasion for a range of tasks. The main areas fished were in Bass Strait, as this was not only a reliable fishing ground, but was close to the Melbourne markets. The catch could be delivered to the railhead at Stony Point for quick despatch to the city, and Western Port was the preferred unloading site to avoid the Rip and the longer journey through Port Phillip Bay.
