HISTORYThis aeroplane is standing on the Stony Point jetty at the seaward end. The Civil Aviation Department has identified this plane as a de Havilland DH50A powered by a 330 HPAD Nimbus engine. Certificate of Registration No. 327 issued 20/09/1919. It was first owned by Larkin Aircraft Supply Co. Ltd. in Melbourne and bore the name of “Sunbird”. Subsequently it had four owners and finally crashed in New Guinea on 17/10/1937. This plane also crash landed on Phillip Island on 23/03/1931. This photo comes from the Arthur Peterson Collection. Printed on the back of the photograph is: “Kodak Print K696”.
DESCRIPTIONThis badly damaged photo shows a small wingless aeroplane standing on a roadway. A long road with a fence on either side leads to buildings in the distance. A man is standing on the right and the legs of another man can be seen underneath the plane. The letters ‘VH-UMN’ are printed on the side. The left-hand side of the photo has been torn away.
