HISTORY

Augustus and Annie Haebich migrated from Germany and settled at Stanton Farm, Bittern, early in the 20th century. Augustus was a butcher who travelled the district with horse and cart, selling his meat. Annie ran a boarding house in the large dwelling and Augustus ran the farm, building stables, a blacksmith shop, dairy, meat cooling house, a bacon smoking and curing shed and even a cobbling shed to be self sufficient. Egan was a Hastings family. On the back of the image is handwritten “ Miss Egan a Bittern school teacher 1920s boarded with Haebich” “at “Stanton” Bittern Farm belonging to August & Annie Haebich” “Donated by Merle Haebich”
