HISTORYThis is an historical design for the Australian Commonwealth flag competition on 31/03/1901. The man on the horse is Lord Roberts. It was designed to commemorate Australia’s United Federalcy. DESCRIPTION“Historical Design for the Australian Commonwealth Flag Explained” is printed across the top of this image, each word a different design. The top half of the image shows a man in ceremonial dress on a horse. His right arm is outstretched and he is holding a sword. Flags, banners, soldiers and state emblems complete the image. One banner reads: “It’s the Stars of the Earth Deny It Who Can”. The bottom half of the image shows two large flags, each with one large and one small star. A sailor on the left and a soldier on the right are beside a flag pole. Pictures and words fill the centre of the image between the two flags.
