HISTORY

This is Tom Roberts’ painting of the opening of the First Australian Parliament in the Exhibition Building in Melbourne on May 9, 1901 by The Duke of Cornwall and York. This photograph comes from the State Library of Victoria. Library Record Number: 1039854. Accession Number: H96.222/7.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows two men in front of an unfinished painting. The man on the left-hand side is sitting on a wooden box on the top of a set of steps. He is holding a pallet and paint brushes in his right hand a pipe in his left. The man on the right is leaning against a stool looking at the camera. His thumbs are in his waistcoat pockets.
