HISTORYJohn Francis (Jack) White was born at Tyabb in 1880, the third child and second son of John and Anne White. Jack and his older brother Andrew ran the family farm at Tyabb after the death of their father in 1906, and as there was a depression in the early years of the 20th century, the brothers took turns to go away working for other people. Jack cut sugar cane in Mackay, Queensland, and worked on a farm in New Zealand. They then planted apples and pears at Tyabb and in 1914 became shareholders in the new Tyabb Cool Store. They also farmed dairy cattle and sheep. Jack joined the Victorian Rangers in 1895 and became a sergeant in the “Ham and Beef” Hastings Battery, and when the Flinders Naval Base opened he obtained a position as watchman there. He was involved in the Catholic Church, the sportsground and the development of roads, and died in 1968
