HISTORY

This parade shows the Governor’s carriage, accompanied by mounted police, on the occasion of the opening of the first Commonwealth of Australia Parliament in Melbourne on May 9, 1901 by The Duke of Cornwall and York. This photograph comes from the State Library of Victoria, Library Record Number: 843106; Accession Number: H92.200/419.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows a street parade. The streets are lined with military men and the public behind them. People are also on the verandahs and windows of the buildings. Soldiers on white horses are escorting a carriage drawn by two black horses. Flags decorate the streets and buildings.
