HISTORY

This is the Hastings State School No. 1098 in 1898. The principal of the school was Mr Ingamells and the assistant teacher was Miss Hall. Captain James Hall was given a grant for the establishment of the Hastings Common School on 1 June, 1871. The school was built on an area of one and a half acres at a cost of 140 pounds. The photographers stamp on the back reads: “Hemmings’ 426 Swan Street Richmond”. This photograph comes from the collection of the Mornington Historical Society and was given to the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society by Val Wilson on 7 June, 2013.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows a group of approximately one hundred children sitting and standing in front of a brick wall. The image is very faded but the girls appear to be dressed in white pinafores and the boys dark coloured pants and jackets with large white collars. There appears to be three adults standing at the back of the group. Four large windows are along the brick wall. The photographers stamp is along the left-hand side of the mounting board.
