HISTORYThis Marker was placed by Beryl Monk in 1988, a Baxter descendant, to mark the district’s first settlers, the Baxter Family. The Marker was placed in Australia’s Bicentennial Year, 1988.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a metal plaque attached to stone. The plaque reads: “Australia 1788-1988 Shire of Hastings Historical Society Inc. Marker No. 7 Placed during Australia’s Bicentennial Year 1988 Benjamin Baxter (1805-1892) held the 15,360 acre cattle station ‘Carrup Carrup’ under lease from the crown from 1840 to 1860. Benjamin and Martha Baxter and their family were this district’s first settlers. Their home, built on the 360 acre Freehold Portion of the Run, was located on the slightly rising ground to the west of here. An Australian Bicentennial project with financial assistance from the Victorian Government and the Shire of Hastings. Tablet placed in 1988 by Beryl Monk, a Baxter descendant”.
