HISTORY

James Barclay arrived in Melbourne from Scotland in 1849 and established a freight business. He married Mary Fiddler and with two young children, John and Jane, moved to Hastings in 1860. They cleared land and built a home which they named Ceres, where three more children were born, Christian, James and Mary. James Barclay died at Hastings in 1913 and Mary in 1915. John Barclay married Rosina Grayden and they lived in Hastings at Heroville. John was a successful farmer, orchardist and fisherman, and future generations of the family remained in the area.
