HISTORYThese photographs come from the Edwin Mawson Collection. They show racing cars and spectator’s cars ready to depart on the ferry for Phillip Island for a car race. In 1927 the Victorian Light Car Club decided to hold a long-distance car race. Phillip Island was chosen as the venue. It was called the “100 Miles Road Race”, the first in Australia and was the forerunner of the Australian Grand Prix. There was no bridge to Phillip Island, so spectators drove to Stony Point and parked their cars along the roadside or at Peterson’s Garage and boarded the ferry to Cowes. Two racing cars in the photographs are the MG and Bugatti.
DESCRIPTIONThis series of twelve photographs show motor racing cars, a car park filled with vintage motor vehicles, a motor garage with ‘R Peterson’s Motor Garage’ in large white letters across the top, a sign which reads “Official Parking Area use Castrol oils”, and four men with two motor bikes and sidecars.
