HISTORYThis is the Bittern 5 Ways General Store in Bittern. Charlie and Sarah Bland took over the store in 1936. They sold out in 1944 when James Ernest and Pearl Slade bought the store. In the 1960s the store was burnt down. Tom Brown owned the truck that is parked in front of the store. The bike was used for deliveries. Printed on the back of the photograph in blue ink is: “From Alistair Rolland Bittern of old Bittern Store printed per EJM”.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a shop front covered in signage. The section in the middle has a brick frontage and the two sections on either side are timber. Windows and doors are across the front. Four verandah posts are along the footpath and an old delivery truck is parked beside the shop. A bicycle is leaning against a post beside the truck. Signs across the front of the shop read as follows: “Bittern 5 Ways General Store, The Sun, The Herald, Globe, Read Argus, The Age, Classified Ads, and The Leader The Popular Weekly”. A gravel street is in the foreground.
