HISTORY

The Somerville Mechanics Institute was built in Station Street, Somerville on land originally owned by Mr Henry Gomm. It opened in 1891. The cost of the building had been borne by the residents of Somerville and district. The gathering consists of local people. It may have been a gathering for the return of soldiers. The soldiers on the far left-hand side are playing in a band.

DESCRIPTION

Approximately fifty people are standing in front of the Somerville Mechanics Institute. The crowd consists of men, women, children, soldiers and nurses. The building has an imposing front consisting of four very tall pillars. The bottom half is brick and the top section is concrete. Large sets of windows are on either side of the imposing entry and front doors.
