HISTORYThis man is the Hon. Alfred Downward, M.L.A. He settled in Balnarring in 1863. He was a Councillor for the Shire of Flinders for nine years and an elected member of the Legislative Assembly in 1894 for the Electorate of Mornington. He was born on 1 April, 1847 at Prahran, Victoria and died on June 27, 1930. He was the second son of Edward and Elizabeth Downward. His parents arrived at the Port Phillip District of New South Wales in 1846 on the “Flying Fish”. The family came from Cumberland, England. The family lived in Mornington, Victoria. Alfred married Josephine Kerr on 19 March, 1879 at Hawthorne, Victoria. Their children were Edward Graham, b. 1880; Elma, b. 1882; Ethel, b. 1883; Elsie, b. 1885; Rupert Charles, b. 1889; Ivy, b. 1890; Eileen b. 1892; Alfred, b. 1930.
DESCRIPTIONThis is a portrait of a man, taken slightly side-on and from the waist up. He has grey hair and a grey moustache. He is wearing a black coat, black bow tie and a white shirt.
