HISTORYThis is the early stages of building a steel mill at Hastings by B.H.P./Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd and John Lysaght (Australia) Ltd. Work commenced in 1970 with production starting in 1973. In 1979 BHP purchased John Lysaght, Australia and in 2001 they merged with Billiton Pty Ltd. In 2003 the company adopted its new name of BlueScope Steel. The following is written in blue biro on the back of the photograph: “Early start of Esso B.H.P. Long Island - Hastings”.
This aerial photograph shows the commencement of an industrial development. Land, paddocks, orchards and buildings surround the development and water and more land is at the top of the image.
