HISTORYThis is the early stages of building a steel mill at Hastings by B.H.P./Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd and John Lysaght (Australia) Ltd. Work commenced in 1970 with production starting in 1973. In 1979 BHP purchased John Lysaght, Australia and in 2001 they merged with Billiton Pty Ltd. In 2003 the company adopted its new name of BlueScope Steel. The following is written in blue biro on the back of the photograph: “Esso B.H.P. Long Island in the making”.
DESCRIPTIONThis aerial photograph shows the building of an industrial site. A large bay can be seen on the right-hand side. Trees, paddocks and orchards are on the left-hand side and at the top of the image.
