HISTORYThis is the early stages of building a steel mill at Hastings by B.H.P./Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd and John Lysaght (Australia) Ltd. Work commenced in 1970 with production starting in 1973. In 1979 BHP purchased John Lysaght, Australia and in 2001 they merged with Billiton Pty Ltd. In 2003 the company adopted its new name of BlueScope Steel. The following is written in blue biro on the back of the photograph: “Esso B.H.P. making of the wharf and plant”.
This aerial photograph shows the building of an industrial site and wharf. Paddocks and orchards are in the foreground and mangroves, water, a jetty and boats are in the top half of the photograph.
