The following is printed on the back of the photograph: “Vehicular ferry, S.S. Westernport, in rough seas off Cowes in 1948, on this occasion it was too rough to berth at Cowes. DESCRIPTION

This image shows a ferry in rough seas. Black smoke is coming from its chimney stack. Four life buoys can be seen along the side of the ferry. Wooden pylons on a jetty are in the foreground. Land can be seen in the far distance.
