HISTORY

This Hastings general store belonged to Ralph Gordon Mentiplay. Ralph was the son of William Mentiplay and Charlotte Kernot. The Mentiplays were a fishing family from Scotland and came to Australia in 1855.

DESCRIPTION

This image shows a grocer store on a street corner. Five verandah posts can be seen and the open door is at the centre of the building. A building with a four post verandah is attached on the right-hand side of the store. A small two-door van is parked at the front of the store. Part of a large sign that reads “ROBUR” is behind the van. “R.G. Mentiplay” is printed on the side of the van. “R.G. Mentiplay Grocer” is printed on a board at the front of the shop. A large electricity pole with a street light attached, is on the footpath in front of the store. Bunting is across the front of the store and attached to the electricity pole. The branches of a pine tree can be seen on the far right-hand side.
